Who we are
Built by two voices.
We've both had groundbreaking interviews that met industry standards and shifted the conversation. As a scholar, Travis has continually uncovered truths about Black people that the masses aren't aware of. As an organizer, Tory has been outside with the people, witnessing firsthand what Black communities are living through.
The combination of scholarly research and firsthand experience with recent, history-shaping moments led us to a shared conviction: these stories need to be documented and told to the masses in the most accurate way possible. We are driven by the desire to uncover and present the true story of Black people.

Travis Harris, Ph.D.
Travis brings a scholar's rigor to the stories Black Rising tells — his research on the African diaspora, race, religion, Hip Hop, Black life and Black culture has moved multiple academic fields forward and has been published in leading academic presses and journals. Travis has been featured on NewsOne, NPR, Moguldom, The Onyx Report, The New Journal and Guide, and more. Bridging academia and community, Travis is committed to uncovering the truths about Black life that the masses rarely hear, and getting them to the people in an accessible, vibrant way.

Tory Russell
Tory was a lead organizer in the 2014 #Ferguson Uprising, sparked by the police killing of Michael Brown Jr. He's been a featured speaker at the AFL-CIO MLK Conference, the MLK Breakfast for the 50th Anniversary of Selma, the Castan Centre's Human Rights Law Conference in Australia, and Justice Or Else, and has written for Ebony, Essence, and Black Agenda Report. Named to Ebony's Power 100 in 2015 and recognized by Revolt TV as a Leader of the New School of Activism, Tory currently serves as Director of Black Organizing at The International Black Freedom Alliance, a global organization dedicated to ending Black oppression through grassroots organizing.
